Our Weakness→ God’s power revealed: A Journal Entry on Exodus 3 and 4

A call from God to do something that seems far beyond our capabilities or qualifications is an opportunity to rely on the Lord and see his power at work. It is a chance to boast in our weaknesses so that God may be exalted for working through even the most powerless parts of us.

Moses had this opportunity in Exodus 3 and 4 when he was called by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. God told him to stand in front of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and command him to let the Israelites go.

These are a few of Moses’ replies:

  • “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” (Exodus 3:11)

  • “What if they do not believe me or listen to me…” (Exodus 4:1)

  • “I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” (Exodus 4:10)

  • “Pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.” (Exodus 4:13)

Moses’ response shows what his faith was in.

He was filled with so much doubt because his faith was in himself. Looking to his own abilities for strength stirred so much fear in Moses that he pleaded with God to send someone else. He knew the limitations he had with his speech and he let those be a reason not to go. He was willing to let his weaknesses excuse his disobedience instead of allowing God to reveal his power in them.

God calls us in similar ways. He calls us to things that are beyond our abilities and comfort, things that will challenge and stretch us. What will our response be?

Often, in these situations, the enemy brings up every inadequacy and insecurity we have in an attempt to lure us to disobedience. We shouldn’t do it because ‘we’re not equipped’ or ‘there is someone else who could do it better.’ Those statements have no validity because they all have to do with us and our power, not God’s. They are rooted in self-reliance instead of faith.

Calls from God have nothing to do with our abilities, but everything to do with his. Do not reject them because your faith is in yourself. Say, “Here I am,” because you know it is God who will do the good work in and through you and he has never failed. Be obedient, and watch his goodness, power, and glory be revealed.

God,

You are all-powerful. When you call me to do something that seems impossible, remind me that nothing is impossible with you. Help me view my weaknesses as an opportunity to rely on you and see your power revealed. Because of who you are, I can confidently say, "Here I am. Send me."

Amen
